I am on a mission to purchase and own as many Black Owned products as possible. I recently set out to find Black-owned ice cream brands at my local grocery stores. The journey begins with the search for Dr. Bombay and JD Vegan ice cream. No matter the weather, Ice cream is the best treat after a hard day of work. Finding a black owned brand will check off another box and get me a step closer to having black owned everything.
Before I begin my journey, I research about the brands to ensure that it is black owned. *Very Important* I have been burned before where I fell in love with a brand that ended up not being black owned. Using my handy dandy internet browser I do a broad search of black owned ice creams. Narrowing it down to those that I can purchase in store. Then, I search for where I can find them to ensure that I can purchase them locally. This can be tricky because it may say that it is in my store but after a physical search it may not be there. That is why I implore you to support these brand in order to keep them in stores. Check out the two ice cream brands that I found below.
Dr. Bombay Ice Cream – A Sweet Venture by Snoop Dogg
Dr. Bombay Ice Cream is the brainchild of Snoop Dogg, who has expanded his entrepreneurial empire into the frozen dessert world. Named after his NFT character, Dr. Bombay, this ice cream brand brings bold, unique flavors inspired by Snoop’s personality and love for creativity. Flavors like Syrupy Waffle Sundaze and Coco Cream Cookie Dream aim to bring fun and innovation to the ice cream game.

JD’s Vegan Ice Cream – Jermaine Dupri’s Plant-Based Treat
Created by music mogul Jermaine Dupri, JD’s Vegan Ice Cream is all about providing a dairy-free, plant-based alternative to traditional ice cream. As a longtime vegan, Dupri wanted to create a product that was both delicious and dairy-free, proving that plant-based treats can still pack flavor. The brand offers flavors like Key Lime Pie, Chocolate My Way, and Peach Cobbler, paying tribute to Southern desserts and Black culinary traditions.
The Search
To support black owned businesses, it is important to be able to purchase from my local stores. Yes, it is easy to order produce online or through a third party, but I am trying to save coins. A quick crank of my car, and I am off to my local Walmart and Kroger in search of a cold treat.
First stop, Walmart! I take a few steps inside and head to the ice cream aisle near the entrance. I scan the ice cream brands to identify the bright colored cartons of the black-owned ice creams. Online the branding is clear and with the name of the brand clearly stated with flavors that are traditional and unique. I quickly identify Dr. Bombay ice cream in the sea of brands scattered throughout the aisle.
Even on my journey to purchase as many black owned products, the price point must be affordable. In Walmart, I found Dr. Bombay’s Baked Blueberry Muffin ice cream at a price that was not bad. I left the store with this new flavor ready to enjoy at a later time.
Unfortunately, I was not able to find JD Vegan Ice cream in my local Walmart. Determined to find more flavors of Dr. Bombay and JD Vegan Ice Cream I traveled to my local Kroger to explore their ice cream selection.
Kroger did not disappoint with flavors. I found more Dr. Bombay ice cream in flavors like Iced Out Orange Cream, Strawberry Cream Dream, Peanut Butter Jelly Time. I did not find JD Vegan Ice cream in either store. I searched up and down the aisle several times in search for this brand.
Overall, I am excited that I have Dr. Bombay in my local stores, but I need you to go purchase them to keep them in stores. It takes a community to support black owned brands. I will try the ice cream and update in another post, which is my favorite. Definitely want to try different brands and flavors.
Let me know below if you want me to find any other brand in my area.
