It’s crazy to think I’m almost a year into my loc journey. Time really flew, and that awkward “ugly loc phase” feels like forever ago. If you know, you know—that stage where your hair is doing everything except what you want, but you just have to trust the process. The struggle was real, but I made it through!

Now my locs are thriving, and I’m at the point where I’m trying to decide if I want a fresh, clean retwist or something with a little more creativity. Either way, it’s a good problem to have.

Why I’m Retwisting My Own Hair

This is actually my second time retwisting my own locs. I usually go to Shea Locs, a Black-owned loctician studio where I first got them started. They wash, retwist, and style for a reasonable price, but as my pockets get tighter, I’m trying to get back to my roots and start doing my own maintenance.

I won’t lie—retwisting my own hair still makes me a little nervous. Watching a tutorial is one thing, but actually grabbing the clips and making sure I do it right? That’s a whole different story. But this journey is all about learning and growing, so here we are!

The Wash

Before I got into the retwist, I made sure I had everything I needed:

Rat tooth comb

Shea Locs Loc Cream

The Doux Mousse Def Texture Foam

The Doux Wash and Conditioner

  • Rubber bands
  • Clips
  • The Doux Shampoo & Conditioner
  • Shea Locs

I’ve had The Doux’s Ladies First Shampoo and Super Sonic Conditioner in my stash since before I loc’d my hair, so I used those. After rinsing, I sectioned my hair with rubber bands—a trick I picked up from my loctician at Shea Locs to keep my locs from unraveling during the retwist.

Back to My Roots

Taking care of my natural hair was easy when I had a braider, and products like The Doux always kept my curls poppin’. But this journey is teaching me that doing my own retwists isn’t just about saving money—it’s about really embracing and caring for my own hair.

If you’re on a loc journey (or thinking about starting one), I hope this inspires you to try Black-owned products and take charge of your own hair care. Drop a comment and let me know what products you swear by—I’d love to hear what’s working for you!

Much love, and have an amazing day!
